c-1Fukui River Bridge and Fukui River

There are three concrete arch bridges in the Fukui River basin: Fukui River Bridge, Yoshida Bridge and Yoshii River Bridge. One of the most difficult parts in the construction of Matsuura Railway traversing the Kitamatsuura peninsula was the section between Senryugataki and Yoshii chiefly because of the series of deep valleys which lie there. The line came into operation after the difficult construction was completed. The bridge was built in 1939. While some believe bamboo was used to make up for the severe shortage of construction materials, because the country was moving deeper into the war, there is no definitive proof. The design of the bridge composed of curves, as it is, indicates the enthusiasm of the engineers who sought to create a unique design despite the ongoing war.
